I can’t quite recall when the “Everybody Poops” book first made its appearance, but I remember it vividly from when my eldest grandchild was just starting to enjoy reading. Just like humans, all livestock must eat, drink, and, yes, poop.

When I think of water and fencing, I’m reminded of the song my mom used to sing: “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage.” This is especially true in livestock management. If you only have one watering site and graze a single pasture throughout the season, it’s no surprise that the densest poop and lightest forage will be in the same area.

A well-designed water and fencing system allow you to manage where your livestock eat, drink, and poop. Those who adopt rotational grazing, or the more intensive adaptive multipaddock grazing (labeled “Regenerative Grazing” in the above ATTRA figure), reap incredible rewards: healthier animals, improved pasture conditions, and a significant boost in carrying capacity—up to two to four times better! By Rotating, you give the land the chance to Rest and Recover.

I often wonder if season-long grazers feel overwhelmed by the idea of dividing their land into dozens and dozens of paddocks. It can be daunting! But starting small can make a big difference. Many successful grazers began by simply dividing their acreage in half, effectively increasing the pasture’s rest period by 180 days.

We’re excited to announce a fantastic video series featuring Dr. Gabe Kenne and the knowledgeable Michael Hall, a former NRCS Grazing Management Specialist. In this 14-video series, they share practical tips on setting up permanent and electric fences, choosing watering systems, and managing livestock.
